About 1,000 high school seniors from throughout the county are expected to attend a Science Festival Feb. 28 at Chapman College.

Astronaut Charles Lacy Veach will speak on space activities planned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Irving S. Bengelsdorf, a specialist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, will be the keynote speaker. Bengelsdorf’s topic will be “The Majesty of the Universe.”

Chapman College officials said the festival also will recognize the “top two seniors from each high school in Orange County.” The selection will be based on the students’ “outstanding achievement in the natural sciences.”

The college will use the daylong event to announce winners of two scholarships to Chapman College. The competition for the scholarships was open to science-oriented students, and selection was based on academic achievement, college admission test scores, an essay competition and a personal interview.

“By holding the Science Festival, we are trying to recognize some of the outstanding opportunities our area has to offer in the sciences,” said Virginia Carson, chairwoman of Chapman College’s division of natural sciences.

“We also hope that through exposure generated by events such as this one, we can improve science education in Orange County.”
