Anaheim : Restaurants Asked for Environmental Reports

Share

Environmental studies soon will begin for two local eating places.

The city Planning Commission on Tuesday asked owners of the two Angelo’s Hamburgers restaurants to conduct environmental impact reports before the commissioners decide whether to grant requests to change operations at the facilities.

Owners of the ‘50s-style restaurants have asked the commission to approve an outdoor patio and sales of beer at the establishment in the 500 block of South State College Boulevard.

They also have asked to continue a drive-in, drive-through service at the other restaurant at 221 N. Beach Blvd.

The Beach Boulevard restaurant has continued operating as a drive-in, drive-through facility despite a City Council decision last December requiring that it offer only sit-down service and eliminate an outside patio.

The city has decided not to fine Angelo’s, pending a decision by the Planning Commission. But Angelo’s does not intend to stop its drive-in, drive-through service while it is applying for the permits, an attorney said.

“It seems senseless (to stop) while we’re taking steps to comply with what they want,” Michelle Reinglass, an attorney for Angelo’s, said Tuesday.

Angelo’s and the city have been at odds since the first restaurant--with carhops on roller-skates--opened. Neighbors complained that Angelo’s “Cruise Night,” held on the first Friday of each month, creates traffic congestion and noise, among other problems.
