A judge Thursday ordered the release of 130 names of concealed-weapon permit holders to the Union-Tribune Publishing Co., which had sued Sheriff John Duffy for the information.
The 130 names must be provided to the newspapers within 10 days, San Diego Superior Court Judge Richard Huffman ruled.
The 130 people did not oppose release of their names in a Sheriff’s Department survey of about 2,700 permit holders.
Huffman said he will decide March 3 whether to review the more than 2,500 remaining permits for possible release.
Information to be withheld from the newspapers about the 130 people includes their addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, any criminal history, medical information and their thumbprints.
Attorneys representing gun owners appeared at the hearing to oppose the newspapers’ request. Attorney Dan Wallace said most of the permit holders are not public figures.
“Copley Press, in my opinion, is on a crusade,” said attorney Richard Henderson.
Attorney Edward McIntyre, representing the Union-Tribune, argued that the information is needed to know if the sheriff is only allowing Republicans, whites or his supporters the opportunity to get a permit.
