TRI-STAR WILL EDIT, RESUBMIT ‘ANGEL HEART’
Tri-Star Pictures on Friday lost its second and final appeal for a re-rating of Alan Parker’s “Angel Heart,” but the film will be edited and resubmitted to the ratings board of the Motion Picture Assn. of America.
“Angel Heart,” an occult thriller based on William Hjortsberg’s novel “Falling Angel,” was given an X rating (no one under 17 admitted) by the MPAA’s Sherman Oaks-based panel. The panel consists of six people, all parents, who are paid to watch movies but are not professionals in the industry.
Tri-Star is not a signatory of the MPAA and is not bound to accept the rating. But a studio representative reiterated Friday that it would not release a movie in either an unrated or X-rated form.
The ratings board will not identify specific reasons for giving “Angel Heart” an X, but it is believed to hinge on one scene between actors Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet where there is simulated sex but no genital nudity.
