Countywide : Showers, Gusty Winds Hit Area; More on Way

Share

Coastal areas of the county were sprinkled with showers while winds rose to 30 m.p.h. at times in Southern California Sunday and snow fell in the region’s mountains. No major damage was reported and forecasters said the rain wasn’t really enough to do much good.

Small-craft advisories kept pleasure craft in harbors from Point Conception to the Mexican border Sunday morning. The National Weather Service predicted southeast to east winds rising to 25 knots at times. All the harbors were open again by early afternoon, however, and meteorologists said Sunday’s storm system was comparatively dry.

At the opposite end of the basin, travelers’ advisories were in effect for the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains, where several inches of new snow fell Sunday morning--and was hurled in the faces of skiers by westerly winds that gusted to 30 m.p.h. in some places.

Newport Beach reported 0.43 inch of rain and San Juan Capistrano checked in with 0.22. The inland communities of Santa Ana and El Toro logged a paltry .02 inch. The high temperature in Newport Sunday was a dreary 60, while Santa Ana fared a bit warmer at 63.

The high temperature was 62 at the Los Angeles civic center, where 0.07 inch of rain was recorded.

The weather today and Tuesday is expected to be partly cloudy, breezy and continued unseasonably cool. Highs are expected to range between 58 and 64, with gusty westerly winds reaching 25 m.p.h. in the afternoon and evening hours. Lows tonight should be in the 40s. Meteorologists said another storm system is dropping southward out of western Canada and should arrive over southern Nevada Tuesday, bringing about a 30% chance of showers for the Southland.
