An 18-year-old woman was struck by a police car Monday afternoon as she and a friend tried to run across a street between cars stopped for a red light, officers said.

Lt. Robert Helton said Paulina R. Ramirez, a Santa Ana resident, suffered a broken pelvis and a lacerated hand. She was reported in stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange Monday night, Helton said.

The accident occurred at 4:50 p.m. near the corner of Greenville Street and Stanford Avenue, Helton said. He said that a patrol officer in a marked police car was traveling south on Greenville and that northbound traffic, backed up about two blocks, was stopped on Greenville for a red light at the Edinger Avenue intersection.

As the patrol unit approached Stanford, Ramirez and another woman ran from the east curb of Greenville between stopped cars, trying to reach the other side. One of the women did.

Helton said the officer driving the police car, whose name was not released, tried to avoid hitting Ramirez but could not.
