A 65-year-old cancer patient who may have less than a year to live was fined $675 and given probation for drunk driving in a hospital parking lot accident in which a woman was nearly killed.

Bernard Jeglor of Normal Heights was placed on three years’ probation by San Diego Municipal Court Judge William Mudd, who suspended a four-day jail sentence and gave him credit for one day in jail.

The victim, Winston Diens, 59, of La Jolla, was critically injured Nov. 11. She suffered massive injuries to her lower body and may not walk again. She has undergone 14 operations and 54 blood transfusions, and remains hospitalized.

The accident happened in the parking lot of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where Jeglor went to receive news about his cancer treatment. Diens was there to visit a friend.

“Mr. Jeglor probably at this time has less than a year to live,” said his attorney, Walter Maund. “He has already suffered tremendously.”

Jeglor surrendered his driver’s license to the court as part of his sentence. Mudd will review the sentence Nov. 24.

“I’m very sorry, Your Honor,” Jeglor said.

Jeglor pleaded no contest Jan. 13 to driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury. He could have received a three-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.
