Alhambra : Street Segment to Be Closed
The city will close Hitchcock Drive where it intersects with Garvey Avenue for six months beginning Monday.
City officials hope to learn whether this move will stop motorists from using Hitchcock, which cuts through a residential neighborhood, to avoid the heavily traveled intersection of Garvey Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard.
City Public Works Director Terry James said that of 500 households in the area responding to a survey, half favored the closure and half opposed it. He said that at the end of the trial period, the households would be surveyed again.
The city also is installing stop signs at the intersections of Montezuma and Palm avenues and Cedar Street and Raymond Avenue, and along Almansor Street between Huntington Drive and Alhambra Road. After July 1, stop signs will be relocated at the intersections of Almansor Street and 6th Street on the north side of the San Bernardino Freeway underpass to improve the flow of traffic along those streets.
And traffic signals will be installed at 1st Street and Commonwealth Avenue, where two-way stop signs on 1st Street now control traffic.
