Assembly Bill Introductions:

Renters’ Credit: AB 888 by Assemblyman Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) would terminate the renters’ income tax credit for persons who have more than $50,000 annual income. Single renters now receive a $60 credit and married couples or single heads of household receive a $137 credit.

Labor: AB 869 by Assemblyman Richard E. Floyd (D-Hawthorne) would prohibit discrimination in employment on the basis of past membership in a labor union.

Small Business: AB 864 by Assemblyman Charles W. Quackenbush (R-Saratoga) would authorize the office of small business to establish and advertise a toll-free telephone number to help small and minority business owners solve their problems.

Automobile Insurance: AB 872 by Assemblyman Richard E. Floyd (D-Hawthorne) would prohibit automobile insurance companies from considering where policyholders live in determining rates. Similar legislation has been rejected in past sessions.

Voter Registration: AB 899 by Assemblyman Tom Bates (D-Oakland) would allow Californians to also register to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or renewal. A similar bill was vetoed by the governor last year. Senate Bill Introductions:

Imported Food: SB 554 by Sen. Dan McCorquodale (D-San Jose) would prohibit the importation of food unless it is accompanied by a list for the Department of Food and Agriculture naming the pesticides applied during cultivation and the application dates.

Cancer: SB 550 by Sen. John Garamendi (D-Walnut Grove) would establish a cancer control planning council to help provide the public with information on how to reduce the risk of getting the disease. The bill also calls for an unspecified state appropriation to support the commission.

Juvenile Crime: SB 527 by Sen. Edward R. Royce (R-Anaheim) would lower from 16 to 14 the age at which a minor may be tried in adult criminal court.

Sewage: SB 594 by Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles) would create a Santa Monica Bay advisory commission to monitor discharge of sewage into ocean waters at the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant.

Pay Equity: SB 511 by Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles) would create a commission to examine the salary differences between male and female state employees. A similar bill was vetoed by the governor last year.
