The unemployment rate climbed to 14.7% in oil-dependent Louisiana in January, setting a record for the Bayou State, a state official said. The previous record for Louisiana, crippled by troubles in oil and farming, was 13.8% last June. In December, Louisiana, with 13.4%, had the nation’s highest unemployment rate. West Virginia was second with 12.6%. The rate is expected to climb even higher when the February figures are complete, Allen Johnson, a spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Labor, said.
