Purdue had just taken down Big Ten leader Indiana, but Coach Gene Keady wasn’t satisfied.

Troy Lewis scored 18 points as the sixth-ranked Boilermakers defeated the third-ranked Hoosiers, 75-64, Thursday night at West Lafayette, Ind. The victory left Purdue (22-3 overall, 13-2 in the Big Ten) a half-game behind the Hoosiers (23-3, 14-2).

“We’re still climbing the ladder, playing for the (conference) championship,” Keady said after his team snapped the Hoosiers’ nine-game winning streak. “That’s just one more rung.”

Purdue made 24 of 32 free throws as three Indiana starters fouled out.

Lewis made only two field goals, both three-pointers, but he sank 12 free throws--including 5 after Indiana narrowed a 12-point deficit to one point in the final minutes.

The Hoosiers again closed within 53-52 before Lewis’ three-pointer halted the comeback for good. The Boilermakers’ lead wasn’t safe, however, until after they made 9 of 11 free throws down the stretch.

Purdue’s Todd Mitchell had 17 points, including five free throws late in the game, and Everette Stephens added 14.

Daryl Thomas scored 18 points for Indiana, while Rick Calloway and Steve Alford had 15 each.

The Tar Heels (26-2, 13-0) built a 43-25 halftime lead and increased it to 53-27 early in the second half before Duke (21-7, 8-5) rallied.

Iowa 93, Michigan State 64--Roy Marble scored 18 points, and the seventh-ranked Hawkeyes scored a school-record 24th victory by trouncing the Spartans at Iowa City, Iowa.
