Local News in Brief : Newbury Park Woman Weds Missouri Inmate
A Newbury Park woman married an inmate on death row at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City in a brief ceremony Thursday, officials said.
Lynn Ann Short, 41, and Gerald Smith, 28, were joined in marriage by a prison staff member who also is a minister, Warden Bill Armontrout said.
Smith received the death penalty for beating to death his former girlfriend on a St. Louis street in 1980.
He is scheduled to stand trial July 6 in Cole County Circuit Court on another first-degree murder charge. He and another inmate allegedly stabbed a fellow prisoner to death in November, 1985.
No one has been executed in Missouri since 1965.
Armontrout said he was not sure how the couple met but assumed they became acquainted through correspondence.
