Kevin Houston scored a school-record 53 points and become Army’s all-time leading scorer as the Cadets defeated Fordham, 98-94, in overtime Saturday in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament at East Rutherford, N.J.

Houston, the nation’s leading scorer with a 32.3-point average, raised his career total to 2,297, one more than Gary Winton scored in his career spanning 1974-78. The 5-11 senior guard also broke the Army single-game record of 50 points set by Mark Binstein during the 1955-56 season.

Houston personally kept Army in the game in the first half, scoring the last 20 points for the Cadets, who trailed, 38-33, at halftime.

Houston made 14 of 37 shots, including six three-point shots, and sank 19 of 22 free throws. The 53 points set a Brendan Byrne Arena record, breaking the mark of 43 set by Gerald Wilkins of the New York Knicks earlier this year.
