A bookkeeper at a Phoenix used-car dealership hit a $1-million jackpot Tuesday at Caesars Palace with money given to him by his boss, a hotel spokesman said.

John Goodman, 23, had flown into town earlier in the day with his boss, Kerry Kelly, who was playing the slot machine next to him when he hit the jackpot worth $1,077,777, hotel spokesman Don Guglielmino said.

Kelly paid for Goodman’s trip and had given him $100 to gamble with, Guglielmino said. Goodman played for about two hours before hitting the jackpot.

“They got together and decided on a whim to come to Las Vegas for a couple of hours,” Guglielmino said.

Goodman, who studies business finance at a Phoenix community college, hit the jackpot just before 5 p.m. in the Olympic Casino section of the resort.

Guglielmino said he was not sure if Goodman planned to split any of his winnings with Kelly, who owns the Pre-Owned Car Co. in Phoenix.

It was the second large jackpot at Caesars Palace in recent months. In December, a Michigan woman hit a $2.6-million payoff, the largest in Las Vegas history.
