The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it is investigating allegations of unsafe equipment installations at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant near San Luis Obispo, but it added that no evidence of any such problems has been been found. Commission Public Affairs Officer Greg Cook said the charges “were very similar or closely related to information which PG&E; (Pacific Gas & Electric Co.) investigated internally several months ago, back in October, (and) to date we have found no evidence of any unsafe or improper equipment installed in the plant.” The San Francisco Chronicle reported that it has copies of confidential PG&E; documents and letters portraying Diablo Canyon safety engineers as overworked and “intimidated” by a purchasing manager angered by criticism of his department’s practices.
