Los Angeles’ bid to build a monument to welcome immigrants, a West Coast Statue of Liberty, has been given a formal start, Mayor Tom Bradley announced. Bradley formed an 18-member Western Welcoming Monument Committee to determine what the symbol should be (it will not be a duplicate of the Statue of Liberty), where it should be placed and how to raise private funds to finance it. The effort started last year after the centennial celebration of the Statute of Liberty. A Japanese development firm has already donated $100,000 toward the still undetermined total cost of the proposed monument.
