NHL Roundup : A Fast Start Carries Red Wings Past North Stars, 9-3

Petr Klima had two goals, and Bob Probert scored on a penalty shot during a six-goal first period that carried the Detroit Red Wings past the Minnesota North Stars, 9-3, Wednesday night at Detroit.

The Red Wings stretched their Norris Division lead over Minnesota to five points. Detroit has 14 games left, while the North Stars, who could have pulled within one point with a victory, have 15 left.

Detroit scored six times on 10 shots in the first period.

Dino Ciccarelli scored his 48th goal for Minnesota.

Hartford 10, Boston 2--Kevin Dineen and Sylvain Turgeon each scored twice during a five-goal outburst in the opening period, and Paul Lawless also scored two goals as the Whalers trounced the Bruins at Hartford Conn.

Hartford increased its lead in the Adams Division to six points over Montreal and nine points over third-place Boston.

The Whalers won the season series from the Bruins, 6-2.

Ron Francis had a team-record six assists.

Philadelphia 4, Washington 2--Peter Zezel scored the clinching goal in the final period, and the Flyers turned back the Capitals at Philadelphia.

The Flyers finished 5-0-1 against Washington this season.

The Capitals have not beaten the Flyers at the Spectrum since April 1, 1984. The defeat dropped second-place Washington 17 points behind Philadelphia in the Patrick Division.

Philadelphia’s Tim Kerr scored his 46th goal.

Buffalo 6, New Jersey 4--Clark Gillies and Mike Foligno each had a goal and an assist as the Sabres turned back the Devils at Buffalo.

The victory moved Buffalo to within two points of idle Quebec for the fourth and final playoff berth in the Adams Division.

Toronto 7, Pittsburgh 2--Rick Vaive and Wendel Clark each scored twice, and the Maple Leafs downed the Penguins at Toronto.

Brad Smith, Mark Osborne and Tom Fergus also scored for Toronto, which had five straight goals after the Penguins tied the score 1-1 early in the second period.

Winnipeg 1, St. Louis 1--Rick Meagher scored on a breakaway midway through the second period at St. Louis to give the Blues a tie with the Jets.

Gilles Hamel scored in the first period for Winnipeg.
