Ortiz Is Named Pac-10 Player of Year; Hazzard Is Selected as the Top Coach

Jose Ortiz of Oregon State and Chris Welp of Washington, the two dominant centers in the Pacific 10 this season, were named to the All-Conference basketball team Thursday.

Ortiz was named player of the year in voting by conference coaches. Welp was named to the team for the third time.

UCLA’s Walt Hazzard was selected coach of the year, while Oregon State guard Gary Payton was named freshman of the year and also defensive player of the year. UCLA guard Montel Hatcher was given the sixth-man award.

Other two-time honorees, in addition to Ortiz, were guard Kevin Johnson of California, forwards Reggie Miller of UCLA, Derrick Dowell of USC and Todd Lichti of Stanford.

Rounding out the squad were forwards Phil Zevenbergen of Washington and Sean Elliott of Arizona, and guards Anthony Taylor of Oregon, Steve Beck of Arizona State and Pooh Richardson of UCLA.
