PHOENIX — The Senate has designated an official state fossil, over protests that pupils already are overburdened trying to memorize the official song, animal, bird, mineral, reptile and amphibian.
“In all conscience, I can’t do that to school kids,” state Sen. Pete Rios said Thursday. Sen. Pete Corpstein said he was worried about what it might cost to buy “all these new textbooks” designating Araucarioxylon arizonicum, a type of petrified wood, as the state fossil. The measure now goes to the House.
