Costa Mesa Pharmaceutical Company Expects Patents

International Pharmaceutical Products Inc., a 4-year-old pharmaceutical company based in Costa Mesa, said it could receive U.S. patents within the next three months for a composition for use in treatment of ulcers and liver disease.

The U.S. Patent Office has sent notices of allowance granting International Pharmaceutical Products Inc. the patents. The patents will be given after the company pays “several hundred dollars” in fees to the U.S. Patent Office, said Dr. Lionel N. Simon, chief executive of the company.

The patents cover a combination of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid that forms chemical compounds that can help treat ulcers and liver diseases caused by alcohol, Simon said. The compositions were invented by Dr. Dan Hollander and Dr. Andrzej Tarnawski of the University of California, Irvine. International Pharmaceutical has licensed the compositions from UCI in exchange for royalty fees, Simon said.
