Reagan’s Speech on Iran-Contra Issue

Ronald Reagan has spoken. Or has he? In his televised speech last week, the President admitted his mistakes in the Iran affair, defended his management style and assured us of a vigorous and law-abiding administration during the next 22 months.

The consensus seems to be that the President said all the right things. And we are all hopeful that his message will be followed up with substance.

While much has been said about the President’s competence and his ability to meet the demands of office, he has bought time with the speech to convince us otherwise. But even after this well-intended speech, I can’t say my confidence level has increased.

It took a press-bashing, a scathing Tower Commission report and extended deliberations with friends and advisers for Ronald Reagan to recognize that there were problems. Had it not been for this intense pressure, I believe it would be business as usual in the Oval Office.

There was a lesson, however, in this ordeal--and the President made mention of it in his speech. The power of the people! He reminded us that the power of government is derived from the will of the people. He is right.
