A former letter carrier suspected of dumping more than 70 bags of mail behind a house he recently sold was arrested Tuesday and charged with delay or destruction of mail by a U.S. Postal Service employee.

Richard Brindle, 47, was released on $10,000 personal recognizance after pleading not guilty before a federal magistrate. The charge carries penalties of up to five years in prison and a $500 fine, Assistant U.S. Atty. Craig Moore said.
