Supreme Court Seeks $18.7-Million Budget
The Supreme Court asked Congress on Tuesday for $18.7 million to operate the court in the next fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1.
The request is $854,000, or 4.8%, higher than the court’s current budget. It includes slightly more than $16 million for salaries and $2.66 million for care of the court building and grounds.
Justice Sandra Day O’Connor told a House Appropriations subcommittee that most of the increase is for inflation and mandatory expenditures. The only new proposed spending is $100,000 to install compact shelves in the court’s library, she said.
“We’re literally out of space,” O’Connor said.
She said the new shelves will create additional storage space by allowing book stacks to roll up against each other, eliminating aisle space. The stacks may then be moved to permit access to them and create aisles where necessary.
