Being the home port for the refurbished battleship Missouri may increase the number of small oil spills in San Francisco Bay, but an environmental impact report said the Navy is capable of dealing with them. The report, prepared for the Navy by Environmental Science Associates of San Francisco, warned of increased oil spills from the 887-foot warship or its support vessels, from which it estimated about 19 spills a year totaling 4,500 gallons. Navy Capt. Frank Giorgio said the Navy will construct whatever facilities are needed to handle the risk of additional hazardous wastes. The 58,000-ton World War II-era battleship, refitted and undergoing sea trials at Long Beach, is to be based at Hunter’s Point in San Francisco Bay by 1989.
