A federal judge in Mobile, Ala., told attorneys to work out a compromise on removal of 45 textbooks he banned from Alabama public schools so the education of the children will not be disrupted. The state had requested an extension of the length of time that the banned books could be used. U.S. District Judge W. Brevard Hand last week ordered their removal because he said they taught the godless religion of secular humanism.
