FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. — An Air Force KC-135 jet tanker practicing for an aerial show crashed Friday at Fairchild Air Force Base, killing at least six people, officials said.
Air Force Sgt. Annette Gay said officials believe the plane was carrying six crew members, but only five could be confirmed dead and one “was unaccounted for” after the crash.
A serviceman on the ground also was killed when his vehicle was hit by the plane. Fire-blackened wreckage was spread over a wide area several hundred yards off the base’s main runway.
Besides the vehicle, the plane hit an unmanned radar tower that toppled into an open area near several large hangars.
