AFI FILM FEST: WEEK 2

L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

SATURDAY

“Trouble With Dick” (U.S.A., 1986, 1 p.m.). This is a one-man show for writer/producer/director Gary Walkow: an amiable farce about a promising young science-fiction writer whose personal life begins to take its toll on his art. We see dramatized sections of both: “The Galactic Chain Gang” and the incursions on his privacy--by his mid-40s, over-aerobicized landlady; by her utterly uninhibited teen-age daughter (a hilariously fine performance by Elizabeth Gorcey, marking her as someone to watch) and by his old college chum, Susan Dey. Walkow’s unpretentiousness and his skill with his actors overcome the picture’s occasional raw edges. Recommended.
