L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:
WEDNESDAY
“Just Like Weather” (Hong Kong, 1986, 5:30 p.m.). Director Allen Fong (“Ah Ying”) assays a mixture of documentary and documentary re-creation in this true story of a young Hong Kong couple who contemplate moving to the United States. While the film maker settled the travel problem by financing their air fare, he has no solutions for his subject’s chronic marital strife, aggravated by the husband’s inability to hold a job and the couple’s singular lack of communication with each another. The style Fong adopts is often confusing, rather than complimentary, to his attempt to blend present-day actuality with events that had previously occurred.
