American intelligence officials say Iran has installed large missiles near the Strait of Hormuz at the southern end of the Persian Gulf, increasing the threat to oil shipping, the New York Times reported. The missiles appear to be of a Chinese design known as HY-2, which in turn is a version of Soviet-designed missiles known in the West as Styx, the newspaper said, citing U.S. intelligence sources. The missiles have a range of 25 to 50 miles, enough to reach into shipping lanes through the strait, according to the report.
