West Hollywood Tenants Get Time, Money to Move

The owner of a West Hollywood apartment house that will be converted to condominiums has agreed to give a group of tenants more time and money to relocate.

Albert Korngute, owner of the three-story, 38-unit building at 848 N. Kings Road, will pay about 18 tenants who sued him in December for illegal eviction and inadequate relocation benefits--an amount equal to their monthly rent multiplied by the number of years they have lived there, according to Ronald L. Rouda, the tenants’ attorney. Korngute has also agreed to allow the tenants to stay until June 15 and to pay each of them a $500 moving fee.

Stan Barnett, a resident of the building for 20 years and a leader of the tenants group, said the original 60-day eviction notice issued in December had upset the mostly elderly residents. “We didn’t know which way to turn,” Barnett said. “By June, everybody will have had a chance to find something else.”
