U.S. Funding of the Contras
It is, indeed, tragic that the Sandinistas have extended the state of emergency in Nicaragua. It is likewise tragic that through the U.S. support of the contra forces, and the U.S.-Nicaraguan trade embargo, we have forced this small Central American country to take these drastic internal measures.
If we are truly concerned with the freedom of Nicaraguans, we should:
1--Support a moratorium on all contra funds.
2--Lift the U.S.-Nicaraguan trade embargo.
3--Support the Contadora process.
Let us not shake our finger in hypocrisy, but let us point it at ourselves, for the freedom of Nicaraguan lies, largely, in our hands.
