Reagan’s ‘Scandal’

Share

For nearly four months, President Ronald Reagan has avoided answering public questions concerning his role in the Iran arms matter.

Instead of information, we have been treated to performances--speeches, photo opportunities, subordinates assuring the public that Reagan is “with it.” We have been posed riddles, “What were you doing in August of 1985?”

Now we get a cute act, “I lost my voice,” by the national jokester.

I did not laugh like the rest of the politicians and press who surrounded the President. I did not think his act was funny. I was outraged.

Reagan is sitting in the middle of a serious inquiry into his own and his Administration’s competence. Questions have been raised concerning violation of constitutional responsibility. The best Reagan can manage is a joke that is most popular with grammar school children caught being naughty.
