Shultz Seeks Funds for Black Museum Off Senegal Coast
Secretary of State George P. Shultz said today he is seeking funds to establish a museum dedicated to the achievements of black Americans on an island off Africa from which millions of blacks were shipped to slavery in the New World.
Shultz told a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that he is recruiting private donations to turn a house on Goree Island off the coast of Senegal into a museum.
He said the United States should buy the house where the first American consulate in Africa was located and use it “to display the accomplishments of blacks in America.”
