U.S. Atty. in Florida Under Death Threat From Drug Lords
The U.S. attorney for southern Florida was surrounded by a SWAT team and hustled into hiding two weeks ago because of a plot to kill him by South American drug lords, federal officials confirmed today.
Leon B. Kellner, who has served as the government’s chief prosecutor in Miami since 1985, returned to work Monday and refused to comment on reports about the extra security.
Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Con Dougherty said intensive security was imposed because of death threats against U.S. officials beginning with the arrest of Colombian drug lord Carlos Lehder Rivas in early February.
