Hazzard Said to Take Out Frustration on Furnishings at Utah Events Center

After UCLA’s basketball team had lost to Wyoming Saturday at the Utah Special Events Center in Salt Lake City, a room adjacent to the UCLA locker room was damaged when UCLA Coach Walt Hazzard apparently took out his frustrations. Several people said they had heard some crashing, which went on for a minute or two.

Bruce Woodbury, sports information director at Utah, said Monday: “We did have a problem, but we have been asked not to make any comment on it. Our tournament manager talked to the UCLA athletic director (Pete Dalis) and he said that UCLA would like to handle any comment.”

Dalis reported, through Marc Dellins, sports information director, that Hazzard had told Dalis “in his frustration, he broke a mirror and he’s sorry it happened.” Other witnesses said Hazzard kicked over a ladder, which broke the mirror. Dalis said that he had heard from the University of Utah, which would be sending a bill.

Reached at home Monday and asked about published reports that he had broken chairs and damaged two CBS television monitors in that room, Hazzard said: “That’s not true. I wasn’t involved in that.”
