The Houston Astros fined shortstop Dickie Thon for walking out of training camp and ordered him to return by the end of the week or be fined $1,000 a day.

Thon, apparently still having vision problems related to a 1984 beaning, unexpectedly walked out of camp over the weekend and returned to his home in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

A close friend of Thon said the shortstop is “scared, real scared.”

“He’s not seeing the ball well at all,” the friend said. “He’s afraid the next pitch he doesn’t see could kill him. Maybe he’s just having trouble admitting that he’s scared.”
