Welcome Statue

A West Coast Statue of Liberty? What about a hotel for the West Coast homeless? Mayor Tom Bradley has put together an 18-member committee to design and place a statue to welcome immigrants to the West (Times, March 6).

One of the reasons that people are coming to the West is for the chance for a “better life.” But does it seem right to spend money on a statue to welcome people to a place where thousands are homeless, jobless and hungry? That does not seem like much of a welcome to me.

I understand that the funding is coming from private donations, but what I do not understand is why this money can not be donated to a committee to possibly set up a housing project to help those here, and those who are coming here, to have the life that they deserve and that they have come for.
