The first field test of bacteria genetically altered to protect crops from frost damage will be on a strawberry patch in Contra Costa County, according to a spokesman for the firm that developed the bacteria. “Based on an evaluation of practical and logistical considerations, we have decided to do our first test in the Brentwood area,” said Jospeh A. Bouckaert, president and chief executive officer of Advanced Genetic Sciences Inc. He said Brentwood, about 45 miles east of San Francisco, was selected because of its proximity to the company’s Oakland laboratory.
