Election Panel to Let Glenn Switch Funds
The Federal Election Commission decided today to allow Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio) to shift about $800,000 left over from his 1986 Senate reelection campaign to his debt-ridden 1984 presidential committee.
The transfer would allow him to reduce by more than one-fourth the $2.8 million in debts remaining from his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
By a 6-0 vote, the commission concluded that the transfer from Glenn’s Senate committee would be legal as long as the contributions were made before the 1986 general election and were within the donors’ limits for that election.
Glenn ‘Very Pleased’
William Brown, treasurer of Glenn’s Senate committee, had requested the advisory opinion from the FEC several months ago.
“I’m very pleased” with the FEC decision, Glenn said in a statement. “That’s good news, and the presidential committee will move expeditiously as soon as we have received official notification from the FEC.”
