Another 151 cases of AIDS were reported in Los Angeles County in February, bringing the total number to 2,810 in the six-year-old epidemic, according to county health officials. The monthly total, representing a 50% increase over the average monthly total, is the result of stepped-up efforts to reduce the large backlog of suspected cases that are awaiting confirmation, said Robert Gates, director of health services. Currently, 191 cases are still under investigation. Of February’s 151 new cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, one was a child, bringing to 16 the number of children under 5 with the fatal disease.
