Judge Angelucci Wins for Shoemaker

Judge Angelucci, the betting favorite ridden by Bill Shoemaker, romped to a 6 1/2-length victory Friday in the $35,000 feature race at Santa Anita.

Carrying 116 pounds in the 1 1/16-mile race for horses 4 years old and up, Judge Angelucci led most of the way, then pulled away in the stretch drive.

The time was 1:41 4/5.

Centenary, ridden by Alex Solis and carrying 121 pounds, finished second. October, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and carrying 116 pounds, was another head back in third.

Because of the heavy win wagering on the favorite by the crowd of 19,506, Judge Angelucci paid $2.80 to win, $3 to place and $2.80 to show. Centenary paid $7 and $4, and October returned $4.80.

Judge Angelucci took the lead early, lost it briefly to October after a half mile, but quickly moved ahead again and had plenty left for the stretch drive.

Neither Centenary, who stayed close to the pace most of the way, nor October could keep up with the leader down the stretch.

It was the third victory in seven career starts for Judge Angelucci, and his second straight since Charlie Whittingham became the trainer of the 4-year-old son of Honest Pleasure.
