Share

T he following are capsule reviews of this week’s screenings at the AFI Film Festival of Los Angeles. Screenings take place at the Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Hollywood, except where noted. Tickets and information: (213) 520-2000 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. MONDAY

“U.S. Short Fiction I” (U.S.A, 1985-86, 6 p.m., Barnsdall). A quartet of recent American shorts highlighted by last year’s Oscar-nominated “Graffiti,” a riveting tale of a young man defying military rule in an unnamed Latin American country by means of furtively drawn political caricatures. Effectively told without dialogue, it evolves into a quest for an elusive love who augments his black-and-white sketches with color pastels. By comparison, “Joni and the Whales,” a sentimental saga of motherhood versus career, and “Girls in Suits at Lunch” (the title tells everything) fare poorly. “Undercover,” on the same program, was unavailable for screening.
