AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

T he following are capsule reviews of this week’s screenings at the AFI Film Festival of Los Angeles. Screenings take place at the Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Hollywood, except where noted. Tickets and information: (213) 520-2000 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. MONDAY

“The Journey” (West Germany/Switzerland, 1985, 3 p.m.). A terse, tragic, psychologically complex film from Switzerland’s gifted Markus Imhoof, director of “The Boat Is Full,” and based on an autobiographical novel by Berward Vesper, who was the son of a Nazi poet and the lover of member of the Baader-Meinhof terrorists. It is at once the story of a desperate man (well-played by Markus Boysen) fleeing the present (circa 1968) only to be confronted with his past--a man propelled from a hated but strong father to a beloved--but equally strong--woman whose beliefs he no longer can accept. Recommended.
