AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

“The Wild Pigeon” (U.S.S.R., 1986, 5:30 p.m.). The bleak aftermath of war permeates a small Soviet village in 1946. Amid the rubble, the villagers find solace in the beauty of the title bird--virtually the only thing deemed of value in this literal and psychological way station. Soviet film maker Sergei Soloviev ventures into an area of scarred memory and allegory frequented by his late countryman, Andrei Tarkovsky. While neither as assured or lucid, the film is rife with haunting images and handily captures the pervasive tension present in this environment. Recommended.
