“Half of Heaven” (Spain, 1986, 3:00 p.m.). The newest film by Spain’s ironic master, Manuel Gutierrez Aragon, briefly unfolds like an exquisitely photographed drama of the underclass, a Spanish “Tree of Wooden Clogs”; then with tongue in cheek it shifts to a comedy-drama with underpinnings of fantasy. Under whatever label it’s marvelous, one of the treasures of this festival, and perfectly performed by all, especially Angela Molina as the girl of humblest beginnings whose way to a niche of influence and power is by nicely un expected means. Utterly unpredictable, an absolutely wonderful experience, it has already won Molina one festival’s Best Actress Award. I should think so. Highly recommended.
