“The Bee Keeper” (Greece/Italy/France, 1986, 9:30 p.m.). A highly formal, elegiac study of a man for whom life has lost its meaning, who is sustained only by the routine of tending his beehives, scattered over the Greek countryside. Somber almost to the point of self-destructing, it is nevertheless impressive in its rigor and in Marcello Mastroianni’s performance, powerful for all its reticence. Directed by Nikos Angelopoulos, best known for “The Travelling Players.” Hard-going, but recommended.
