“Castaway” (Great Britain, 1987, 9:30 p.m.). Nicolas Roeg’s new film is literally a desert island movie. Oliver Reed places an ad in the personals for a woman to share a year with him on a remote atoll. However, far from being prurient, the film takes on anthropological overtones that are quite captivating and picturesque. Rather than a picnic outing, life on the island proves to be both a physical and psychological survival test for the two inhabitants (Amanda Donahoe plays the woman), and Roeg captures their plight realistically and sympathetically. Recommended.
