Junior Philharmonic Orchestra Holds Auditions for Musicians

The Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, which is celebrating 50 years under one conductor, is holding auditions for Southern California musicians between the ages of 12 and 25.

The orchestra also is mobilizing former members for an all-alumni orchestra to perform during its golden jubilee week in May. Many former members are with major symphonies throughout the United States, Israel and Japan. They will be joined by graduates who have gone on to other fields.

The orchestra was founded by its present conductor, Dr. Ernst Katz, on Jan. 22, 1937, as the Little Symphony. It grew quickly and was renamed the California All-Youth Symphony, and finally the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra of California. It draws its members from 55 communities in Southern California.

Several first chairs are open for competition this year, including principal flute, solo clarinet, principal viola and principal percussionist. There are no audition fees or membership charges.
