Americans’ acceptance of sex education in their local elementary schools has risen sharply in the last two years, doubtless in response to the AIDS epidemic and the alarming increase in teen-age pregnancies. And the vast majority of those favoring sex education for young children think the curriculum should include discussion of AIDS. In a new Gallup Poll, 71% expressed support for sex education classes in grades 4 through 8 of their public schools while 21% were opposed. The extent to which AIDS has influenced public opinion is illustrated by the fact that upwards of 90% of those favoring elementary school classes on sex believe discussion of AIDS should be part of the curriculum.
