Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates and Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky called on the City Council to authorize a special $4.3 million expenditure for police overtime. Gates said the appropriation would put 190 more full-time officers on the street, heightening law enforcement’s presence throughout the city. In January, the council approved a similar $3.7 million expenditure for police overtime to fund task forces battling gang-related drug dealers, prostitutes and traffic violators. Because of the extra funds, there were 2,477 more arrests in February than during the same month in 1986, Gates said. City Administrative Officer Keith Comrie has recommended against the $4.3 million appropriation.
